BASTEI NATIONAL PARK – THE SWITZERLAND OF SAXON
If you have a time to visit Germany, don’t forget to put Bastei on your checklist! The landscape is thrilling, the forests are remarkable and the hiking trails are super sporty, you will be able to see Bastei rocks all over the place, and then, at the end, the Bastei bridge.
Just 40 minutes away from Dresden by train, you will arrive at Bastei National Park, where a short ferry trip can be taken to take tourists across the beautiful Elbe river. There you can choose a hiking trail base on your capability. Hiking up inside the forest, you will see giant mushrooms and feel the thin breezy air where suddenly a breath-taking beautiful bridge appears before your eyes, built nearby huge rocks right in the heart of the national park. This is when your hiking efforts are paid off.
Originally built from wood as a tourist attraction in 1824, the Bastei Bridge was replaced with the stone structure we see today in 1851. And ever since people have been flocking to do the Bastei Bridge hike.
At Bastei Bridge you can enjoy great view of the surrounding
landscape of the river and forest from high above. There are also certain
look-out platforms in other parts where you can take a rest during the long hike,
enjoy some fresh air and wind, and take some memorable photos.
The Bastei Bridge and surrounding areas can be entered
either on your own or through a guided tour. It’s all free, only the tickets
for the train and ferry need to be paid. You may want to bring some snacks or sandwiches
for a small picnic, or you may choose to try local food at a small restaurant
where they serve delicious smoked trout with brown bread and salad.
I am sure you will not regret spending a day at this place.
