Strawberry Picking Season
Erdbeerpflücken – German Families’ Favorite Summer Activity!

One of the many things that
fascinate me as a student studying in Germany is their national obsession with
seasonal products, one of them being strawberries – or (die) Erbeere! They are now the 5th
most popular fruit in Germany just behind apples, bananas, grapes, and peaches! Each
person consumes around 3.5kg of strawberries every year!
One
of the simple joys of life is picking fresh strawberries in Germany and eating
to your heart’s content (or at least that’s what the Germans would say!)

The duration of strawberry picking
season is super flexible, it usually lasts from May until July. You can find fresh German Erbeere in grocery stores across the country but 35% of the
country’s harvest is sold directly to customers via road stalls or farm shops.

There
is something really special about German Erbeere.
They are not pumped full of hormones to make them plum-sized but are generally
quite small – and unbelievable sweet. Plus, the experience of having to pick
them out ourselves makes eating them even more enjoyable!

You
get to “sample” Erbeere as you go. The Erbeere
that you pick in the fields is much cheaper than those you buy in supermarkets
and grocery stores. Some are covered
in dirt. Some have some bugs you have to brush off…but you just eat them. No
one got sick!

Erbeere in such a field will cost you about 3-4 euros
per kilogram, not counting all those kilograms that you eat in the collection
process – that’s right, we are even invited to try out the Erbeere ourselves! I also helped myself every time we went to Erdbeerpflücken together and I have to say afterward I did not
need to have dinner anymore! Just a few Erbeere
are enough to make my stomach full!
